Should Virtual Production Supers be HODs?
I was recently invited to a Virtual Production Roundtable hosted by the BFI (British Film Institute) and ScreenSkills in London (with cake).
Surrounded by leading figures from UK universities, world-renowned studios, award-winning cinematographers—and me—I was as surprised to be included as you might be.
The discussion focused on how to support new entrants and professional training in Virtual Production, as well as the evolving relationship between VP and traditional film & TV departments.
It was an insightful session, and I’ll share more updates as things progress. But one particularly thought-provoking question stood out: Should a Virtual Production Supervisor be considered a Head of Department?
While we didn’t explore the specifics of what that would look like, the idea certainly made everyone pause. It’s no secret that bringing a VP Supervisor in early makes productions more efficient and more creative. They provide honest guidance and help determine the right solution for each shot—often one that isn’t Virtual Production at all or a version that hadn’t been considered.
But is the filmmaking industry ready to embrace that shift? Maybe...
